Trampoline World Championships - Final Qualification For The Olympics

The 21st World Championships for Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-Trampoline will be held September 23-26 in Sun City, South Africa. This is an historic event, as it is the first time that this world championship will be held under the auspices of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). In addition, the Individual Trampoline World Championships is the final qualifying event for selection to participate in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

Delegations are expected from as many as 35 countries with close to 350 participants. In conjunction with this event, the 14th World Age Group Games will be held the following week, September 30-October 3. Up to 1100 participants from over 23 nations are expected to compete.

In the individual trampoline competition, twelve men and twelve women will qualify for the Olympic Games. Places 1-10 will be attributed to competitors according to their final ranking, with a maximum of one per federation. If a federation has more than one competitor in the top 10 of the final ranking, the qualification is attributed to the federation with the open right of selection.

Places 11-12 will be nominated by the FIG Executive Committee in consultation with the TR-Com (to guarantee an adequate representation of the Continents, to make sure the Host Country of the Olympic Games is represented and/or to cater for other unforeseen cases.) If there are no special circumstances as mentioned above, those two places will be assigned following the same criteria as places 1-10.

Trampoline competition consists of one compulsory and one voluntary routine in the preliminaries and one voluntary routine in the finals. Each routine consists of 10 skills. The results of the preliminaries are carried forward to the individual finals. The final results are made by adding the total scores from the preliminaries (compulsory and voluntary routine) and that of the final routine.

The program and organization for the Olympic Games are identical to those of the World Championships with the following exceptions: 1)Not 10, but only 8 competitors participate in the finals; 2) The results from the preliminaries are not carried forward to the finals. The finals begin from zero.

The trampoline equipment for the World Championships and the Olympics is being provided by Eurotramp (Germany).
