First Steps 7 - Tariff Rules

Introduction

The tariff of each trampolining move is a measure of the difficulty and is based on the number of half twists and the number of quarter somersaults. The diagram to the right shows the two axis of rotation that make up most of the moves performed on the trampoline. The (a) axis is the twisting axis and the (b) axis is the lateral or somersault axis. The more twist and rotation then the higher the tariff or difficulty.

How Tariffs are Calculated

  1. Each quarter turn in somersault is worth 0.1.
  2. For every complete somersault add 0.1. So a complete somersault is worth 4 x 0.1 (for each quarter) + 0.1 (for the complete somersault) = 0.5.
  3. For each somersault in the straight leg position, i.e. straight or piked, add a further 0.1. So a front somersault (Piked) is worth 4 X 0.1 (for each quarter) + 0.1 (for the complete somersault) + 0.1 (for the straight legs) = 0.6 and a double front (Picked) is worth 1.2. Somersaults with a twist do not qualify for the additional 0.1. Twist bonus takes priority over shape bonus.
  4. For each half twist add 0.1. So a Barani (P) is worth 4 x 0.1 + 0.1 (for a complete somersault) + 0.1 (for the half twist) = 0.6. Note: No bonus for the straight legs because of the twist!
  5. Multiple somersaults of 720° or more, with or without twists, executed in the straight or piked position, will be awarded and extra 0.2 points.
  6. Any move which is repeated (however good) is worth 0.

Tariff Database

Below are examples of a few moves from the 153 stored in the database.

Move ID Move Description Tariff Quater
SS
½ twists
1st SS

2nd SS

3rd SS
Shape
21 ½ Twist Jump 0.1 0 1 0 0
45 Back Drop 0.1 1 0 0 0
51 Back S/S (S) 0.6 4 0 0 0 S
52 Back S/S (T) 0.5 4 0 0 0 T
73 Barani (T) 0.6 4 1 0 0 T
99 Full In - ½ Out (P) 1.5 8 2 1 0 P
141 Seat Drop 0.0 0 0 0 0
143 Seat to Feet 0.0 0 0 0 0

You can see how the tariff increases with more twists and rotations. Note: although a seat drop to feet is two moves, it's still zero tariff, which is hard luck for beginners!

The tariff database, on the main left menu, allows you to make up your own routines, calculate the tariff and store routines for later use.

Next, we take your well prepared routines to a competition...
